What is Kubernetes – Official Documentation Terms and Phrases Explained Simply

Deciphered Kubernetes Page URL

The official documentation for Kubernetes is pretty dry and full of technical words and phrases.

If you would like to make sure you can benefit the most when you take time to read the official documentation, make sure you know the technical stuff first.

The link below opens up the official documentation for the overview of “What is Kubernetes”

Kubernetes Fundamentals – What are Containerised Workloads

Kubernetes is described as extensible because it is very configurable.

Containerised workloads can be described as anything that runs in a container.

You might first think of just an app, but containers can many different types of workloads, such as an operating system.

They can be much more than just an app, that is why they are described as workloads.

What are Labels in Kubernetes

Find out what micro tutorials are.

what_well_cover

In this micro tutorial we will cover in simple easy to remember terms, what a Kubernetes label is.

I’d Like You to Know

These MicroTuts are meant to inspire further learning around the topics they cover.

My hope is that they can be used as reference to more easily gain additional knowledge.

If you would like some MicroTut’s created for a subject you are interested in then please use the form at the bottom of this page.

Kubernetes Labels

Labels can be used for different object in Kubernetes.

Adding a label to a pod for example will allow you to search and filter for a specific pod. You can perform action on pods by referencing the labels to. E.g. deleting pods with label that have a specific key and value.

Labels are created in an object.

"metadata": {
  "labels": {
    "key1" : "value1",
    "key2" : "value2"
  }
}

Each key should be unique in an individual object.

What is a Cluster in Kubernetes

Find out what micro tutorials are.

what_well_cover

In this micro tutorial we will cover in simple easy to remember terms, what a Kubernetes Cluster is.

Every Day Cluster Definition

A cluster in everyday terms can be used in a sentence like “The cluster of grapes was very large”. It is a group of similar things.

A cluster of people.

Kubernetes Cluster

A Kubernetes Cluster is like a bee hive.

A cluster is made up of nodes that work together to form a more powerful and complex machine.

When you deploy a program to a cluster the workload involved in running the program is intelligently shared out between the nodes.

If any resources (nodes) are added or removed, the cluster will handle the redistribution of the workload so that the program can keep running without interruption.
